Wednesday’s Poem & Tunes

Romance
by Edgar Allan Poe

Romance, who loves to nod and sing
With drowsy head and folded wing
Among the green leaves as they shake
Far down within some shadowy lake,
To me a painted paroquet
Hath been—most familiar bird—
Taught me my alphabet to say,
To lisp my very earliest word
While in the wild wood I did lie,
A child—with a most knowing eye.

Of late, eternal condor years
So shake the very Heaven on high
With tumult as they thunder by,
I have no time for idle cares
Through gazing on the unquiet sky;
And when an hour with calmer wings
Its down upon my spirit flings,
That little time with lyre and rhyme
To while away—forbidden things—
My heart would feel to be a crime
Unless it trembled with the strings.

Thursday’s Poem and Tunes…

The Paradoxical Commandments by By Kent M. Keith

People are illogical, unreasonable, and self-centered.
Love them anyway.

If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish ulterior motives.
Do good anyway.

If you are successful, you will win false friends and true enemies.
Succeed anyway.

The good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow.
Do good anyway.

Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable.
Be honest and frank anyway.

The biggest men and women with the biggest ideas can be shot down by the smallest men and women with the smallest minds.
Think big anyway.

People favor underdogs but follow only top dogs.
Fight for a few underdogs anyway.

What you spend years building may be destroyed overnight.
Build anyway.

People really need help but may attack you if you do help them.
Help people anyway.

Give the world the best you have and you’ll get kicked in the teeth.
Give the world the best you have anyway.

Poem Of The Day…

Hold You In My Smile by Ernestine Northover

Sweet moment, stay with me,
and pray do not flee so soon,
Let me enjoy the bliss of that
first kiss beneath the moon.
I wish to cradle this feeling,
that has only just been found,
A feeling that has unexpectedly
turned my world around.
Do not depart, Oh please remain
within my heart awhile,
So that I can savour you once more,
and hold you in my smile.

Poem of the day… “Somewhere I Have Never Travelled” By E.E. Cummings

“Somewhere i have never travelled, gladly beyond
any experience, your eyes have their silence:
in your most frail gesture are things which enclose me,
or which i cannot touch because they are too near

your slightest look easily will unclose me
though i have closed myself as fingers,
you open always petal by petal myself as Spring opens
(touching skilfully, mysteriously) her first rose

or if your wish be to close me, i and
my life will shut very beautifully, suddenly,
as when the heart of this flower imagines
the snow carefully everywhere descending;

nothing which we are to perceive in this world equals
the power of your intense fragility: whose texture
compels me with the colour of its countries,
rendering death and forever with each breathing

(i do not know what it is about you that closes
and opens; only something in me understands
the voice of your eyes is deeper than all roses)
nobody, not even the rain, has such small hands”

New author interview next Monday and flash fiction piece soon!

Lisa

Flash Fiction – Throwing Caution To The Wind

(an excerpt from The Diaries Of Debra Westlake by Lisa Montanino)

I’ve been giving some thought to this idiom—a cliché to be very careless. How many of us can attest to letting the chips fall where they may? I bring this up since a couple of my friends have been finding themselves dealing with this subject. One is trying to grapple the reality of her kid going to college i.e. the dreaded empty nest syndrome and worries of her son’s welfare. Another is dealing with a new baby on the way along with exorbitant amounts of fear “to never be careless again until they graduate high school.” I don’t agree with this by the way. Just because I have a child doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy being a kid sometimes. It’s okay to have him babysat once in a blue moon while I’m out with friends reliving sweet memories of our college nights. Everyone deserves to be carefree, you just can’t make it a habit. Like everything else, there is a fine line of overindulgence + denial + hubris + selfishness = doomsday. So balance, baby… it’s all about balance.

Probably the only exception where you can be excused of being excessively cutesy in redundant fashion is being in love. However annoying it is to see gratuitous couple and family pictures or constant ridiculous social media statuses of “You’re the love of my life” you have to give these poor saps some rope. They have no clue how insecure it makes them appear and there’s no harm with exuding admiration even if ‘balance’ (that I mentioned above) isn’t in their vocabulary. Everyone is different in their expression and if you ask me, it’s better to be overkill than closed off. Anyone who’s cautious with their heart usually winds up losing the coveted love connection they were lucky to synch with in the first place. Some people may argue with that, and that’s cool, but I’d rather succumb to love than regret not letting those proverbial chips fall wherever they so choose to. Anything else short of that is not living; am I wrong? Look, taking a chance on fate is not easy, this I know. No matter how many times I struggle with all the potential cons that may pop up in regards to a relationship, I’m constantly reminded every day I read the newspapers saddening articles of fatal multiple stabbings and shootings that life truly is short. You have to follow your heart and once you do, don’t guard or contain it = another formula for doomsday. It’s when you take off the façade and pour your inner most thoughts out authentically, is when you gain complacency and your partner becomes further riveted by you—guaranteed.

And now a dilemma.

What do you do if the one you’re foolishly sacrificing everything for doesn’t do the same back? Some are left feeling like they live in an igloo. Others lack assurance, and some question if they are truly being loved in the way they are providing. Therein lies one of the many quandaries of life. Think about it. How would you feel if you were the one lacking the affection you’re craving to have? I bet it would feel lousy… no? No matter how much analysis you do perusing the web for clues in the hopes to understand whatever you call this, the fact remains—you’re officially a fool for love. A fool who may at some point ponder the age-old question: Do I walk away in the hopes of gaining some of my ingenuity back by meeting someone more worthy of me? Or stick it out being frustratingly unfulfilled? Living the ultimate game of subterfuge.

Don’t look at me for an answer… because if I had it, I’d probably be an acclaimed award-winning philosopher regularly featured on talk shows oozing out the highest levels of acumen. But alas no. I’m as baffled as you are. I guess the only thing you can do is rely on faith that the person you’re in deep with feels the same; because when someone is ‘head over heels’ any rationale they possess goes out the proverbial window. That in itself is the ultimate surrender—a reckless abandon to marvel at.
